Pokfulum Reservoir Works.

Dear Sir

In reply to your note 286 of yesterday I beg to make the following observations.

Pumping.

I conceive we should only require to pump in the Puddle Trench and sunk wells that we cannot afford to lose any time or incur cost from delay; it is far from being wise to trust to Hand Pumps either force or lift in excavating Trench if we encounter any springs and it is almost probable we shall; it is very doubtful indeed if we could keep pace with it by Hand Pumping.

In having a proper Centrifugal pump the advantages are security and speed, two most important things; and a properly constructed pump will not choke with either mud or even small stones.

Engine.

A small steam Engine is for the safe execution of this work indispensable; it will pump water and also work Mortar and Pegg Mills, both of which ought to be on these works.

My experience with coral lime being that no mixing with shovel on the spot incorporates it with ferruginous clay or decomposed granite so as to make good ...
